Can Claude control a telescope?
Yes. Claude can run a real robotic telescope when the network offers an API and your account has observing time. The viral Reddit post used StellarDock, a browser service run by iTelescope, and iTelescope's terms ban robots on that interface. The legal route is an API such as Las Cumbres Observatory's. The five-minute route is our free satellite and meteor tools.
What the viral post did
A widely shared r/ClaudeAI post in November 2026 showed Claude booking robotic telescopes on StellarDock. StellarDock is a beta service run by iTelescope Pty Ltd. It opens in stages, so public sign-up may not be open yet. You buy credits and book telescopes in Australia, Chile, the USA and Spain. Price: Plans $50/month (Explorer, 50 credits), $150/month (Observer, 150 credits), $300/month (Astronomer, 300 credits); 1 credit = US$1; telescopes 20-150 credits/hour (T80 lowest at 20/hr). Its site mentions no API or MCP server. Booking happens in a browser dashboard.
Why an agent shouldn't drive StellarDock
iTelescope's terms ban robots on its telescope interface. The terms of use say:
“Using robots to access iTelescope's LaunchPad and/or Telescope Control User Interface is strictly prohibited.”
An AI agent clicking through that dashboard is a robot on that interface. The same terms allow one account per person or household. We could not find separate terms on StellarDock's own site (check). So we list StellarDock for people to book themselves, and our MCP server does not connect to it. Ask iTelescope before you automate anything there.
Legal ways for an agent to use a telescope
Las Cumbres Observatory: the official API route
Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) runs a global network of robotic telescopes and publishes APIs for them. Agents can use those APIs within LCO's rules. The docs are at developers.lco.global .
- Request observations by API. Send a request group to
observe.lco.global/api/requestgroups/with the API token from your profile. This works only when your account has time on an approved proposal. - Get time through a programme. Schools, clubs and nonprofits apply to Global Sky Partners ; the latest round closed October 29, 2026. Anyone may apply for Director's Discretionary Time . Member institutions get time through the LCO Science Collaboration. Standard open-access calls are suspended for semesters 2026B to 2028B (source ). LCO's pages list no fee for these routes (check).
- Read the public archive with no key. The science archive API answers public queries without an account. Anonymous users get 1,000 calls per 24 hours. For example, this query returned 488 processed public frames of the Orion Nebula (M42) on November 1, 2026:
curl -sS 'https://archive-api.lco.global/frames/?public=true&target_name=M42&reduction_level=91&limit=1'
License: LCO images and data are for scientific or educational use under CC BY-NC 2.0 . Science data stays private for a default of one year; education data is public at once. Credit “Las Cumbres Observatory”. LCO is not in our MCP server yet.
Other telescope networks
| Network | Can an agent use it? |
|---|---|
| Skynet (UNC) | It has an API with keys. Accounts are for students, researchers and shareholders, not the general public (check). |
| Telescope Live | Subscription credits buy One-Click Observations in the browser. We found no public API (check). |
| Slooh | Members watch live feeds and book missions in the browser. We found no developer API (check). |
| MicroObservatory | Harvard's free robotic telescopes for education, used through its web portals. We found no API (check). |
| Unistellar | Citizen science needs your own Unistellar telescope and app. There is no remote rental. |
What works in five minutes today
Your agent can read real sky data right now, free, through our MCP server. It has 22 live tools from Carbon Intensity API, Global Meteor Network, Lichess, NOAA National Weather Service, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, NOAA Tides & Currents, RCSB Protein Data Bank, SatNOGS, USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, USGS Water Data, UniProt, adsb.lol. SatNOGS volunteer ground stations record satellite passes as radio audio and waterfall images. Global Meteor Network cameras film meteors every night. These tools read recordings and daily data. They don't point a telescope or an antenna.
- Add
https://www.realworldmcp.com/api/mcpto your agent. Setup steps. - Paste one of these prompts.
01See and hear a real ISS pass
Find the 3 most recent good SatNOGS recordings of the ISS. For each, give the ground station, the pass time, and the links to the waterfall image and the audio file.
02Meteors over your city
Were any meteors filmed within 400 km of London in the Global Meteor Network's latest daily data? Give the time, shower, brightness and speed of the 5 newest.
03The newest fireballs
Show me the 5 newest fireballs from the Global Meteor Network: meteors with a peak magnitude of -2 or brighter. Where did each start glowing, how high, and how fast was it going?
Questions people ask
Can Claude control a telescope?
Yes, when the telescope network offers an API and your account has observing time. Las Cumbres Observatory has an official API for observation requests; you get time through its education partners or an approved proposal.
Can I let Claude use StellarDock or iTelescope for me?
Not as a robot. StellarDock is run by iTelescope, and iTelescope's terms of use say: "Using robots to access iTelescope's LaunchPad and/or Telescope Control User Interface is strictly prohibited." Book StellarDock yourself in the browser, or ask iTelescope about automated access.
Is there a free telescope API with no sign-up?
Yes, for archive data. The Las Cumbres Observatory science archive API answers public queries without an account, up to 1,000 calls per 24 hours. New observations need an account with approved time.
What can my AI do with the sky right now?
Add the Real World MCP MCP server (https://www.realworldmcp.com/api/mcp). It has free live tools for SatNOGS satellite recordings and Global Meteor Network meteor data. They read real data; they don't control instruments.
